Peepers

Preview Image:
Lupin takes a fast, unexpected right deeper into the woods.
Just beyond the cluster of cedar ahead, a deafening chorus.
Melodies bouncing, ringing in every direction. Tiny creatures
hiding in a sun-filled marsh that is stuffed with remnants
of last summer’s cattail reeds stiffly poking through mounds
of melting snow.

Peepers. How many?
We stand as close as we can without putting our toes
in glistening water cupped in cool mud. As Lupin listens,
a smile seems to appear on her sled dog lips.
